Recently, Georgia Tech athletics announced two major changes for its radio broadcasts of sporting events. Wes Durham, the long time play-by-play announcer of Yellow Jackets football and basketball games is stepping aside from that role to pursue TV opportunities.
“After 18 years and more than 750 football and basketball broadcasts with Georgia Tech, I am excited about the next phase in the television industry.” Durham said. ”I can’t begin to thank the Yellow Jacket fans, players, coaches and staff for their support of my work and the great memories I will carry forward in this new move.”
Durham is an eight-time Georgia Sportscaster of the Year, including 2010 and 2012. He was the winner of the Furman Bisher Award, presented by the Atlanta Sports Council in 2006. In addition to his play-by-play duties at Tech, he also served as host of weekly call-in shows and television features for Jacket football and basketball.
In a second announcement, Tech athletics and Atlanta’s WQXI 790 The Zone radio station jointly announced that the station no longer will broadcast Tech football and men’s basketball games. Yellow Jackets games had been broadcast on 790 for the past 12 years.
Since 2008, Georgia Tech games and ancillary programs have been carried simultaneously in the Atlanta market by All-News 106.7 WYAY-FM, an affiliate of Cumulus Media. That arrangement as the Yellow Jackets’ flagship station will continue.
